WIFS LeadHER Blog – Finding Your Tribe

Tribe

Growing up in a town of fewer than 1,000 people in the northwest corner of Missouri I always had a sense of who I was and where I was from. Yet, when I moved to New York City, fresh-faced and fancy free right out of college, the realization that there were more people on my subway train each morning on my way to work than in King City, Missouri was a little daunting at times.

My father encouraged me to “find my tribe” and look up the University of Missouri Alumni Chapter in NYC after getting settled. He explained to me that I would have an instant connection with these people as we had a common bond of the University, and that we would just “get” each other without having to explain a whole lot. And they would also know that Missouri is in the center of the US, something that New Yorkers still seem to have trouble locating when I tell them where I’m from.

Fast forward about five years when I became fully immersed in the insurance and financial services industry, one that I feel has incredible opportunities for women, yet we still hover around 14 percent of the industry. It was very apparent that I needed to find a new “tribe,” one that would just “get” me in this aspect of my life. I found this with WIFS.

What’s the good news, Ladies? August Edition

August BlogI can’t believe that the summer is coming to a close! So true what they say: The older you get, the quicker it goes! I know our industry has seemed like a tennis match this summer with the various proposals on health care, so I’m sure you all need a break if you haven’t had one already. I’ve never watched so much C-Span in my life.

Since open enrollment will soon be upon us again, I hope you have all had some R&R time to unplug yourselves and your business. I find it is so important to recharge and come back to work with a fresh mindset! This month, I’m excited to introduce you to three women I admire and have had the pleasure of working with either through associations or my practice. Click here to feel inspired as you meet Brittany, Denise and Susan!

Feature Friday: What’s the good news, ladies? May Edition!

MayBlog

So, first things first …I won! I’m still in shock over winning the BenefitsPRO Broker of the Year Award!  This was the award that I told you about last month. Internally, they call it the BOY Award, so it was extra gratifying for this GIRL to take the crown!  The BenefitsPRO BrokerExpo conference in Indianapolis was incredible, and I was honored to be recognized by my peers in the industry — truly a highlight in my career thus far.

This month, I’m excited to introduce you to Cornelia, Joan and ShirleyAnn.  Cornelia has been a longtime advocate for our industry and for women as well, and I feel very fortunate that I met her through her national involvement in WIFS.  Joan has made a huge impact on my career by showing me the value of education and how crucial is is in our industry. She is my go-to resource for anything concerning our industry’s legislative landscape. And finally, ShirleyAnn. I don’t even know where to begin — to know ShirleyAnn is to experience her. She has an exuberance that just makes you want to strive for greatness in our industry.  I am honored to introduce you to these incredible women, and I know you’ll enjoy getting to know them a little better and hearing about the great things they are doing in our industry!

What’s the good news, ladies? Mentorship!

GoodNewsMarch2017

Very excited to share this month’s installment of “What’s the Good News, Ladies?”  This month you get to meet three women who are very near and dear to my heart. These are three women that I have had the pleasure of mentoring in my career, and I would have never met them if it wasn’t through the opportunities I received in volunteer leadership in serving on the National Board of Directors for Women in Insurance & Financial Services (WIFS).

I have always felt passionately about mentorship — no one in this industry got to where they are today without the assistance of someone looking behind and helping to pull them up. I continue to have amazing mentors and advocates in my career, and I have chosen to pay it forward by mentoring others.

Click here to let me introduce you to Mary, Krystyl and Ashleigh, three bright stars that I am happy to call mentees, colleagues and most of all friends!
